Nurse Success

Capital AHEC has partnered with Austin Community College (ACC) on a three year Nurse Success HRSA grant starting July 1, 2009 and concluding June 30, 2012.  AHEC will provide all Pre-Entry components of the grant for ACC by encouraging high school student in the target area to consider a career in nursing.

This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in nursing and are looking for hands on activities and information on this profession.  With the growing insecurity in our economy coupled with the increased shortage in nurses, there has never been a better time to consider a future in nursing.

This year we will focus on 4 key areas that will help educate the greater Austin area on nursing.

HOT Jobs
This is a cool guide to teach you about health careers in Texas. The web site lists over 80 different health careers, their job responsibilities, work environments, job outlook, length of training/requirements, licensure/certification requirements, salary, education programs available, and professional associations.  Booklets and parent guides are also available to students and teachers.

Summer Camp
This year Capital AHEC will be hosting two five day overnight camps for high school students dedicated to nursing. During the camp attendees experience many different careers in nursing through tours, shadowing, panel discussions, and medical procedures.

Nursing Academies
This year Capital AHEC will be hosting five, one day Nursing Academies in different counties.  These academies are offered to high school students who show an interest in nursing and focus on educating students on the options available in the career of nursing.

Shadowing
On the job experiences are available for students interested in nursing on an individual basis.  This opportunity allows students to shadow a health professional for a day in order to determine if it is a career they are interested in.
