Summer Camp

Each year Capital AHEC sponsors a summer camp that is designed to give high school students an opportunity to explore a wide variety of health careers.  This year Capital AHEC will offer two summer camps and both will focus on careers in nursing. Through this camp, students will learn about careers in nursing and how to start preparing for their future.  The camp is limited to a small number of participants in order to ensure that each student engages in hands-on activities.

The 2010 Nursing Career Sumer Camps will be held:
June 7-11 at the University of Texas at Austin
June 21-25 at Texas State University in San Marcos

How much does it cost?
The total cost of each of the 5 day overnight summer camps is $50. This amount includes all meals, lodging, and activities.  Checks should be submitted with your registration form and made payable to Capital AHEC. If a student is not selected to participate in one of this year’s camps their check will not be cashed. If a student is selected for the camp and is unable to attend, Capital AHEC must be notified at least 2 weeks before the camp to receive a refund.

Who is eligible to attend?
All high school students in the Capital AHEC service region who are entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade and turn 16 on or before June 7, 2010 are eligible to attend.  Each student must attend all five days of the camp and have a sincere desire to learn about opportunities in nursing.

What activities are offered during the camp?
Students will be part of many different activities during camp including tours of local hospitals, the chance to learn medical procedures, participate in a simulation lab, and meet health professionals.  Students will also be offered a shadowing opportunity.

How do I register to attend Summer Camp?
To register for one of the Capital AHEC 2010 Nursing Camps complete the registration form and return it to Capital AHEC with a check for $50 by May 1st.  Acceptance packets will be mailed out May 7th.
